Phyllis "Lynda" Volker, 62, of Rahway passed away Thursday in Beth Isreal Hospital, Newark.
Born in Newark, she came to Rahway in 1955.
She was a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church/Church of the Good Shepherd, Rahway where she currently was serving as Junior Warden, over the years she held many positions in the Church including Warden.
She was a graduate of Douglas Womens College with a degree in Education, she was a graduate of Kean University with a Masters in English Literature. She was employed by the Woodbridge Board of Education as an English Teacher at the Iselin Middle School for 39 years before retiring in 2009. She was honored in 2005 as the teacher of the year in the State of NJ.
She was president of the Womens Club and Junior Womens Club of Rahway. She was a memebr of the State Board for the NJ Federation of Womens Clubs.
She was predeceased by her brother Robert H. Chankalian, surviving is her sister Mary Ann Knecht, a niece Amy Palazzo, a nephew Robert Chankalian, loving friends Kelly Maass, Andrea Twombly and Fran Nartowitz, she was also loved by her honorary nieces Sara Maass, Karen Melvin, Beth Heath and Lauren Seavy. Services will be held on Monday evening January 25, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Church of the Good Shepherd, Irving Street, Rahway. Arrangements have been completed by Pettit-Davis Funeral Home, Rahway, NJ.www.pettitdavisfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd or Seeing Eye Foundation, Morristown.
