Jeannette Johnson Pettit, 92, passed away on January 28, 2010 in Rahway Hospital. Family and friends are invited to visit from 7 to 9 on Saturday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 on Sunday at the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home, Rahway, NJ. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:15 at St. Cecelia's Church in Iselin, with burial at Hillside Cemetery, Metuchen. Jeannette was born in Jersey City on November 2, 1917, grew up in Iselin from 1922 -1944 and was a long time Rahway resident until moving to Wall Township in 1984. Jeannette graduated from St. James Woodbridge grammar school in 1931, St. Peter's High School New Brunswick in 1935, and attended Douglass College for Women where she majored in music. Jeannette was an accomplished church organist, beginning at the age of 13 in St. Cecelia's where she played for 20 years. Jeannette later directed the music program at St. Joseph in Carteret, then became Director of Music for St. Mary's parish in Rahway for 25 years until her retirement in 1987. Jeannette also substituted as an organist for many churches in Union and Middlesex counties, and gave private piano and organ lessons. Jeannette married J. Erwin Pettit on December 18, 1944. Upon the death of her beloved husband in 1955, Jeannette attended the American Academy of Mortuary Science and became a fully licensed mortician and funeral director in 1957. Jeannette successfully ran the family business for many years, and was appointed the first female morgue manager in Union County by the Board of Freeholders. Jeannette was very active with various Rahway civic and social organizations including the Rahway Hospital Auxiliary, Red Cross, Rahway Women's Club where she served as 2nd Vice President and Treasurer, and the Ilderon Outing Club. Jeannette was pre-deceased by her parents Raymond L. and Elizabeth R. Johnson, her husband J. Erwin Pettit, her sister Eileen Johnson Crowley, 3 brothers Raymond L. Johnson, Joseph I Johnson and Walter J. Johnson, sister-in-law Dorothy L. Johnson, and a beloved nephew E. Patrick Johnson. Jeanette is survived by her loving daughter Jeannette Pettit-Duma, her devoted son-in-law Andre Duma, her brother Edward P. Johnson, her brother-in-law F.J. Crowley, Sr., her nephew Francis J. Crowley, Jr. and his wife Mary Cathrin, her niece Eileen Crowley Fritsch and her husband Frank V, her nephew Joseph S. Johnson and his wife Robin, grand nieces and nephews Jennifer Crowley, Kathleen Crowley-Trevino and her husband, Pedro, Virginia Fritsch, Frank J. Fritsch VI, Theresa Johnson, Clair Johnson, John Johnson and Johannes Hanselmann, as well as a great-grand-niece Caroline Trevino and a great-grand-nephew Christian Trevino, in addition to many loving cousins.
